Liberal Member for Molonglo, Richard Mulcahy, has urged parents of younger children to support the bi-lingual programme at Lyons Primary School and consider enrolling at the school.
Mr Mulcahy last week attended the Open Day at the school where he met with the Principal, President of P & F and the Co-ordinator of the Italian-Australian Centre of Canberra who are based in the school.
Mr Mulcahy stressed the value of having the ability to speak a second language and said learning another language assisted pupils in other disciplines such as science and maths.
“We live in a far greater multicultural community today than what we did 20 years ago and it is a great bonus in the workforce these days if you can speak an alternate language.
“Lyons Primary School is one of two bi-lingual schools in the ACT, the other being Telopea Park School.
“Lyons has been providing courses in Italian since 2003 and has now achieved a target of 50% of classes in Italian with the balance in English.
“I am encouraging parents to look to Lyons Primary if they are interested in their children having the ability to speak a second language.
“I was taught French as a student, although I never attended a bi-lingual school.
“Throughout my career I have made extensive use of that language training and have had the need to utilise French in four different fields of employment.
“A second language is a skill that I’d like to see more students equipped with,” Mr Mulcahy said.
