Lyons Bilingual Primary School  /  Curriculum

Curriculum

The curriculum at Lyons Primary school is organised to meet the needs of students as expressed in the ACT Curriculum Framework’s Essential Learning Achievements. The descriptors of the ELAs incorporate the National Statements of Learning. That is, the Lyons Primary School curriculum covers all of what has been deemed at a national level as being essential for all Australian students to learn and it includes all those extra dimensions of learning that have been chosen as forming part of the core of all students’ learning by the ACT Department of Education. The curriculum also includes those features regarded as worthwhile for this particular school community as decided by the school board and wider Lyons community through consultation.

Essentially we offer a curriculum similar to many found across the ACT. The difference is that half is delivered through the medium of Italian. 50% of our Key Learning Areas are taught by fluent Italian speaking teachers. The curriculum is organised around seven Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Studies of Society and Environment, Science, The Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education.

Decisions are made each year about which areas will be taught in each language depending upon the expertise of the staff members and with an emphasis on having more hands-on activity delivered in Italian.

Homework

Homework is given to students to provide children with the opportunity to practise skills and enrich ideas developed at school. It also provides an opportunity for the parent to engage in the child’s learning. Appropriate homework is set by individual teachers to meet the individual needs of children in their classes.
